London was hit by at least four confirmed bombs this morning, all detonating within an hour of each other. It was rush hour in the city when the first bomb exploded near the Liverpool Street Tube Station at 8:49. BBC News reported seven dead in that explosion.
8:56 brought bomb number two, also in the Tube on a train heading from Russell Square to King's Cross. At least 21 people are confirmed dead.
The third blast occurred at 9:17 on another Underground train near the Edgware Road Tube Station, killing at least five and affecting three trains. No one is reporting it, but this explosion happened in the part of town with a concentrated Arab population. At least one Londoner suspects the bomb went off at the wrong time in the wrong place. I suspect Islamist terrorists are indiscriminate in who they kill.
The final confirmed explosion came in Woburn Place / Tavistock Square at 9:47 from a red double-decker bus. BBC says "it is unclear how many casualties have resulted from the blast."
Some reports have deaths numbering as high as 45, with more expected and hundreds injured. One report speculates on 7 bombs, though that is currently unconfirmed.
The bombings occurred with the beginning of the G8 summit in Scotland, and though politicians and news agencies are claiming they were timed to coincide with the G8 meeting, the group claiming responsibility for the attacks did not mention it. As The Guardian points out, the statement was posted on a website popular with terrorists and is currently of unverified authenticity. Der Spiegel posts the message signed by "Secret Organization -- al Qaida in Europe:"
Rejoice, community of Muslims. The heroic mujahedeens today conducted an attack in London. All of Great Britain is now shaken and shocked in the north, the south, west and east. We've warned the British government and the British people time and again. We've kept our promise and have carried out a blessed military operation. We continue to warn the governments of Denmark and Italy and all other crusader governments. We demand that all countries pull their troops out of Afghanistan and Iraq.
Rejoice at the death, destruction, and hatred. Terrorists continue to endear themselves to the public.
