| $96 million in Iraqi funds vanished |

While our government clearly handles our money like they don't have to earn it, one might think that when handling another nation's money, they might take extra care to see that it gets spent wisely. However, as VOA News reports, "a U.S. federal inspector says more than 96-million dollars earmarked for projects to rebuild Iraq cannot be accounted for." A report released today by Stuart Bowen (the federal inspector)
describes how tens of millions of dollars were dispersed for Iraq construction projects with little or no documentation during 2003 and 2004.
The report says that while incompetence or haste may account for some problems, there are indications of fraud.
The inspector general notes the money in question was not U.S. taxpayer dollars but rather Iraqi money designated for reconstruction projects.
I know - they didn't have to earn it and it's not their own money, so why should we expect that they care? Because while I might drive my own car into the ground, frivolously spend most of my money on heroin and booze, and knock holes through my walls in inebriated frenzies, I certainly don't want to be at fault for doing the same to my friend's assets.
